Checklist#

Complete this checklist BEFORE the hackweek!

Earthdata#

Each participant will need an Earthdata login to access NASA data. You will need to know your Earthdata username and password. If you do not already have an Earthdata login, then navigate to the Earthdata login page, register, and record your username and password somewhere for use during the hackweek.

GitHub#

GitHub is a hosting service for git repositories, enabling us to collaborate on code within and across teams. There are two reasons you are required to have a GitHub account for the hackweek:

  1. GitHub is the authentication provider for access to the event JupyterHub.

  2. Project teams will be encouraged to use GitHub to collaborate on code. If you do not already have a GitHub account, sign up at github. You will need to answer a few required questions in the following dialogs. Be sure to save your username and password somewhere for use during the hackweek.

CryoCloud#

We are partnering with CryoCloud, which is a JupyterHub built for NASA Cryosphere and Earth science communities. All that is required to write and run code on this web platform is a browser and a GitHub account for authentication. Please follow these instructions which will guide you through gaining access to the CryoCloud.

  1. Fill out the Getting started with CryoCloud form to provide your GitHub username and other information to get you on the hub. The “Award Number” was sent in a welcome email.

  2. A day or two after registering, you will receive an invite to the CyroCloudUsers team within the CryoCloud organization. This will be an email from GitHub at the email you linked to your GitHub profile. Accept this invitation within 7 days, before it becomes invalid. CyroCloudUsers team membership provides you with access to the CryoCloud. You will be invited to join our Slack Workspace at the same time.

  3. Browse over to the CryoCloud JupyterHub to confirm access. You will need your GitHub username and password to sign on.

Feel free to choose and start a server. To shut a server down when you are done exploring, please navigate to File > Hub Control Panel and click the Stop my Server button. We ask you to do this on every use because keeping a session active uses AWS resources that are billed per time of use. If you forget this step, the server will shut down automatically after 90 min of no use. To save our community money, when you are finished working for the day it is really helpful for you to manually stop your server before logging out of your JupyterHub session.

Slack#

You will receive a Slack Workspace invite after you sign up for CryoCloud. Add yourself to the #pace_hackweek channel at https://cryospherecloud.slack.com to join the community, get updates, develop project ideas, and ask questions.

Nerd Nite#

On the evening of Wednesday, August 6th, we will be hosting “Nerd Nite”. This will be an informal and fun atmosphere, where mentors and participants can give entertaining presentations on anything even remotely related to PACE. The goal is to combine education with entertainment and include opportunities for audience participation. Keep it under 15 minutes, and leave time for questions. We encourage the use of slides, videos, music, inflatables, or other perceptual aids to enhance their presentations.

Feel free to get creative! You might play music, share interesting or funny fieldwork stories, perform an interpretive dance, lead a game, or do a stand-up comedy routine.

Review Material#

There is way more than one-week’s worth of information about PACE! We suggest reviewing some of the following material before the hackweek:
